Biking With Your Dog Using the SPRINGER
No practice is necessary (of course you need to know how to ride a bike!). In an emergency – should your dog run on the wrong side of a tree, hydrant, pole or other object – a special patented safety release frees your dog instantly, without any discomfort to you. (Note: The dog's pulling will not dislodge the safety release; the spring absorbs the shock. The safety release separates when you and the dog separate due to an obstacle causing a U-shaped pull. Three extra safety releases are included in your kit just in case).
During the first second of your dog's charge to the side, the coil spring absorbs the impact, and transfers only about 20 lbs of the force, or less, to the bike, regardless of how strong your dog is. The torque is reduced to less than 1/10th of what it would have been without the Springer. By lowering of the point of impact, but in particular, the flexing of the coil spring, you have time to react to re-adjust your balance, just as you do today (without even thinking about it) if caught by a gust of wind. And because the Springer doesn't jerk your bike, it doesn't jerk your dog either. It’s actually more gentle on your dog than if you were jogging or walking with your dog on a leash!
The Springer comes complete with an unpadded, basic nylon harness designed to fit all body sizes to get you started. In the long run, you’ll be happier with your Springer if you purchase the Escape Artist Walking Harness for maximum comfort and control. This fully padded harness with adjustable side straps comes in 10 different sizes.
The Springer was developed in Norway. So far, more than 200 European newspapers have given the Springer very favorably reviews, generally calling it "a long needed, extremely useful, ingenious product of high quality." After hearing about the Springer, the Swiss police were at first skeptical, so a sample was sent to the Zurich Police’s dog patrol. A few weeks later, the Zurich Chief of Police wrote: "For two weeks we tested the bike rack Springer with a two-year-old patrol dog of the breed German Shepherd. We are thrilled and enthused! Most of all, with Springer the biker may concentrate fully on the other traffic, without ever being hampered or distracted by the attached dog."
