Escape Artist Changed Dog's Behavior

We recently purchased an Escape Artist Harness for our Norwegian Elkhound (a very intelligent, independent, strong willed, loves to run type breed for those not familiar) as she's able to slip collars unless they're on so tightly that it's physically impossible (and very uncomfortable for her) to do so. She didn't do well with regular harnesses found in most pet stores as she could easily slip out of them. We were hoping this one would make us able to take her on walks and bike rides again without having to worry that she'd slip her collar or harness and run off.

We got this one on her very easily, and (as I'd expected) on our walk she tried to slip it and was VERY surprised when she couldn't. In fact, she ended up turning herself around and found she was facing me instead of running free. After an initial confused look (It almost seemed to say, "What? I can't..how..I guess games of chase are over!"), she seemed to realize that she couldn't slip out and run off and walked very nicely with me. I don't have to "pop" her every two seconds to remind her to walk nicely with me, she does it automatically now.

We've also been able to go on bike rides again as she can't slip this harness and her usual tactic of "stop dead so the collar slides off" doesn't work as it turns her around backwards and she still can't slip out and run off. She tried it once, as she tried to escape on a walk once, and hasn't tried since. Since her one failed attempt she's jogged nicely next to the bike with no abrupt stops, pulls or attempts to escape.

Initially she seemed to sulk a bit at not being able to play her favorite game of "slip my collar and make them chase me", but she seems to be realizing that it's much more fun to run and walk WITH us rather than away from us now. She's been through obedience classes, but even then would try to slip her collars and we never felt comfortable using a pronged or choke collar with her.

Now we don't need to. She walks very nicely, no pulling, no attempts to escape, and no more attempts to pull us off of our feet when we walk by squirrels! - Amanda W.
